4-H is a youth organization committed to building outstanding leaders with marketable skills to succeed in today’s global society. 4-H empowers youth to reach their full potential, working and learning in partnership with caring adults.

What is 4-H?

4-H Youth Development is part of Kentucky Cooperative Extension.  Extension’s mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of Kentucky citizens through non-formal education for the entire family.  Extension agents and volunteers take the results of university research and explain it in such a way that different age groups can learn and apply the information to their own lives. Kentucky 4-H believes in providing positive youth development experiences that all youth to experience belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity.

4-H Club Information

Estill County 4-H Teen Club is open to any students grade 6-12. This club meets the first and third Tuesday of each month at 4:00 p.m. at the Estill County Extension Office. Club members learn leadership and communication skills, work on service projects, and much more. 

*4-H Clubs meet September through May. 

Cloverbud Club is open to youth ages 5-8. Signups are held each program year (September) due to class size limitation. Cloverbuds meet the fourth Tuesday of each month at 4:00 p.m. at the Estill County Extension Office. Each Cloverbud MUST be accompanied by an adult.

Jr. Cooking Club is for Estill County youth age 9 through 5th grade. Sign ups are held each program year (Junior Cooking Club meets the third Wednesday of each month at 4:00 p.m. at the Estill County Extension Office.

Horticulture Club is for youth ages 9-18. This club is perfect for youth interested in gardening and plants. For more information or to sign up for Horticulture Club, please contact the Estill County Extension office by calling 606-723-4557.

4-H Goat and Sheep Club is for youth ages 9-18. This club is for any youth with an interest in learning about, and showing goat and sheep. For more information about this club please contact the Estill County Extension Office at 606-723-4557.

4-H Photography Club is for 4-H age youth 9-18. During this club participants learn tips and ideas to become a better photographer, whether they are using a camera or a cell phone. Participants work on items to showcase in the local 4-H Expo for a chance to display their work at the Kentucky State Fair. 

Teen Cooking Club is for Estill youth grades 6th - 12th (Limited spots available). Youth learn basic and advanced cooking skills and much more. This year they will learn create and experience meals from around the world. This club starts at 4:00 p.m. and last between 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the meal and cleanup. 

4-H Shooting Sports—(Ages 9-18): Club usually lasts from January through September and offers the following programs: Trap Shooting, Pistol (.22), Archery, and .22 Rifle. Please keep an eye on the website and Facebook page for updates on this club.

4-H Summer Camp 2024 - Estill County 

Camp dates: July 2nd - July 5th, 2024
Camp Location: J.M. Feltner 4-H Camp, London, Kentucky
Cost: $100 for Estill County residents only - Includes $50 non-refundable application fee due at the time the application is dropped off at the Estill County Extension Office, 76 Golden Court, Irvine, KY 40336

*(Camp cost is $300 per camper, but thanks to generous donations from our local contributors the cost will be $100 per camper this year.)

  • We have a scholarship opportunity available (if awarded scholarship will pay the remaining balance AFTER parent/guardian has paid the initial camp deposit amount). All scholarship applications must be received no later than May 20, 2024. All aspects of the scholarship application must be completed. Incomplete scholarship applications will be voided and parent/guardian is responsible for paying the remaining camp balance due.

ESTILL COUNTY 4-H SCHOLARSHIP
Revised March 2019

Selection Criteria: 

  1. Graduating high school student who has participated in 4-H four (4) out of the last six (6) years in the Estill County 4-H Program.
  2. ACT and / or SAT scores which predict achievement at the college level.
  3. Academic excellence in the classroom.
  4. Extracurricular activities, especially in the area of 4-H. 
  5. Application to an accredited, 2 or 4 year institution of higher education which           grants degrees, with credit hours of a minimum of 12 hours / semester.
  6. Currently enrolled in 4-H members who have participated in 4-H four (4) out of the last six (6) years.
  7. The Scholarship Committee will review the applications and make recommendations to the 4-H Council, which will vote and make the final decision.
  8. Application winner will be advised in writing. 
  9. Scholarship will be paid to the recipient in the form of a check, payable upon presentation of a college schedule.  There will be no restrictions as to what the money has to be spent for. 
  10. The amount of the scholarship will be $500.  Scholarship will be awarded in the amount of ½ per semester.  Second ½ of scholarship will be given upon receiving a copy of the college schedule for the spring semester and a grade transcript for the fall semester.
  11. Applications will be available in Spring semester of graduation year, and must be turned in complete by deadline set by local high school guidance office.  NO LATE ENTRIES will be accepted.

H.T. AND DORIS HARDY 4-H SCHOLARSHIP

CHANGES EFFECTIVE 2-26-13

  1. REQUIREMENTS TO RECEIVE AWARD
  •  Must be an active 4-H member
  • Must be a graduating High School Student
  • Must be attending college of their choice the fall after high school graduation.
  1. AWARDS AND PAYMENT
  •  The amount of scholarship will be $500 dollars
  • Announcement of the recipient will be at graduation or at an appropriate awards program.
  •  Recipient will get the actual funds after August 1 and before August 15 of  graduating year with proof of Registration and Class Schedule.
  •  If recipient decides to forfeit the scholarship, then the scholarship funds and the award will be given to the second place choice.
  1. SELECTION OF RECIPIENT
  •  Selection of the scholarship recipient will be joint committee of all Estill County Extension Agents.
  •  If there are not active graduating students and/or senior 4-H members, then the scholarship funds will be used to send 4-H members to American Heritage Conference or to 4-H Camp.
  • If for some reason the 4-H Program should be discontinued, the interest will be compounded back to the principal amount of the Certificate of Deposit.

How does 4-H benefit youth?

4-H’ers, regardless of their background, socio-economic status, race or gender, benefit from their participation in Kentucky 4-H. Positive youth development studies have affirmed that compared to other youth, young people involved in 4-H are:

  • Four times more likely to contribute to their communities. 
  • Two times more likely to be  civically active.
  • Two times more likely to make healthier lifestyle choices.
  • Two times more likely to participate in Science, Engineering and Computer Technology  programs during out-of-school time.
  • 4-H girls are two times more likely (Grade 10) and nearly three times more likely (Grade 12) to take part in science programs compared to girls in other out-of-school time activities.
